Eresus

The town on the southwest coast of Lesbos where Theophrastus was born, on the island where Aristotle did the marine biology that shaped both of them.

Eresus was a small place on a large and fertile island. Theophrastus left it for Athens and became Aristotle's closest collaborator, then ran the Lyceum for thirty-five years after him. The two had worked together on Lesbos during Aristotle's time in the eastern Aegean, dissecting sea creatures in the lagoon at Pyrrha. Theophrastus willed his own garden and library to his colleagues, which is how the school survived.
