Hanover

The ducal seat where Leibniz spent forty years as librarian and court historian, and where he died with almost nobody in attendance.

Leibniz took service with the House of Brunswick in 1676 and stayed for the rest of his life, cataloguing the library, engineering the mines in the Harz, and researching a family history that grew so vast he never finished it. His employers found him increasingly irritating. When the elector became King George of England the court moved to London without him. He died in 1716 and his funeral was attended by his secretary.
