Meßkirch

Baden · Modern Germany

A small market town in Baden at the edge of the Swabian hills, where Martin Heidegger was born, returned to in old age, and was buried, the ground to which his thought on rootedness and place always returned.

Messkirch is a small town in Baden where Heidegger's father was sexton of the Catholic church and the family lived beside it. He returned throughout his life, and the essays about paths, fields, and country roads describe this particular landscape rather than an idea of one. His conduct in the 1930s makes the rootedness he preached difficult to read innocently. He is buried in the town cemetery, a short walk from the house where he was born.
