Nagarjunakonda

The valley on the Krishna river in southern India that carries Nagarjuna's name, a major Buddhist centre of monasteries and stupas.

Nagarjunakonda held dozens of monasteries and stupas under the Satavahana and Ikshvaku rulers, and later tradition connected the site to Nagarjuna himself, though the archaeology is a couple of centuries later than he is. The valley was excavated and then flooded by a dam in the 1960s, and the principal monuments were cut apart, moved and rebuilt on a hilltop that is now an island. What survives of the place survives because it was carried uphill.
