A Greek colony on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy, founded by refugees fleeing the Persian conquest of Ionia. Here Parmenides wrote the poem that split reality from appearance and argued that change itself is an illusion, and his student Zeno sharpened paradoxes in its defense. From one small city, the Eleatic school forced every later Greek thinker to answer for the very idea of Being.

A prosperous Achaean colony on the toe of Italy, famous for its athletes and physicians even before Pythagoras arrived from Samos around 530 BCE. Here he founded something between a school, a religious order, and a political movement: mathematics, music, and communal living fused into a way of life. Its influence over the city's politics ended violently, with the brotherhood's meeting houses burned.

A small Greek town on the coast of Chalcidice, in the shadow of the Macedonian kingdom. Aristotle was born here in 384 BCE, the son of Nicomachus, physician to the Macedonian king, a family trade of close observation that never left his philosophy. Philip II destroyed the town in war and, tradition says, rebuilt it as part of Aristotle's price for tutoring his son Alexander.

The sacred center of the Greek world, built on the slopes of Parnassus, where the Pythia spoke for Apollo and cities from Spain to the Black Sea kept treasuries. Two maxims carved at the temple, Know Thyself and Nothing in Excess, became philosophy's first commandments. It was here the oracle declared that no one was wiser than Socrates, the riddle that set his questioning life in motion.

A wealthy trading city commanding the isthmus between mainland Greece and the Peloponnese, famous for luxury and for the Isthmian games. Diogenes the Cynic spent his last decades here, living in deliberate poverty among the rich. It was in Corinth, the story goes, that Alexander the Great offered him anything he wished, and was asked to step out of the sunlight.

A port city on the southern coast of Cyprus with deep Phoenician roots, trading between the Greek and Levantine worlds. Zeno was born here around 334 BCE, probably to a merchant family, and it was a shipwreck on a trading voyage that stranded him in Athens. He turned the accident into a school: Stoicism, named for the painted porch where he taught.
