Marrakesh

The Almohad capital below the Atlas mountains, where Ibn Tufayl served as court physician and introduced the young Ibn Rushd to the caliph.

Marrakesh was founded by the Almoravids and taken by the Almohads, who made it the capital of an empire running from Andalusia to Tunisia. Ibn Tufayl was physician and adviser to Abu Yaqub Yusuf, a caliph who liked philosophy and disliked how obscure Aristotle was. Ibn Tufayl, feeling old, brought the young Ibn Rushd to court and suggested he write the commentaries. Everything Latin Europe later called Averroism began with that introduction.
