The Bavarian capital where Ockham took refuge at the court of Ludwig of Bavaria, an excommunicate protected by an emperor the pope had also excommunicated.

Ludwig of Bavaria was in open conflict with Avignon over whether a pope could confirm an emperor, which made his court the obvious refuge for Franciscans who had decided the pope was a heretic. Ockham spent his last twenty years here writing political treatises rather than logic. The story that he told Ludwig to defend him with the sword and he would defend Ludwig with the pen is probably invented, but it is the right shape. He died in Munich, most likely of plague, still excommunicated.
