The American capital where Frantz Fanon died of leukemia in 1961, at thirty-six, having arrived to receive treatment and barely lived to see The Wretched of the Earth in print.

Fanon was flown to Washington in 1961 for treatment of leukemia, having once refused to go to the United States at all on account of how it treated Black people. He was thirty-six and had months left. He spent his final weeks correcting proofs of The Wretched of the Earth, which was published while he was dying. His body was flown to Algeria and buried in the country whose revolution he had joined rather than on the island where he was born.
