Soli

A Greek trading city on the Cilician coast, remembered today mainly for the loose grammar of its colonists, 'solecism' comes from the way they spoke Greek. Chrysippus was born here before making his way to Athens and the Stoa.

Soli was a Greek city on the Cilician coast whose settlers spoke a Greek their mainland cousins found so mangled that the word solecism was coined from the name. Chrysippus was born there, went to Athens, and turned Stoicism from a set of positions into a system, writing over seven hundred books and building a propositional logic that was not matched again until the nineteenth century. The ancient verdict was that without Chrysippus there would have been no Stoa.
