Kues

Also known as Bernkastel-Kues

Moselle · Modern Germany

A small wine-country town on the Moselle where Nicholas of Cusa, a boatman's son, was born: he never stopped identifying with it, taking the Latin name Cusanus and, on his deathbed in Italy, willing that his heart be sent home to the hospice he founded here.

Kues is a small town on the Moselle among the vineyards, and Nicholas was a boatman's son from it who ended his life a cardinal. He kept the name. In his will he left his library and an endowment for a hospice in the town, to house thirty-three poor men in memory of the years of Christ's life. The building still stands, still holds his books, and his heart is buried in its chapel.
