Mount Etna

Europe's largest active volcano, and the crater into which legend says Empedocles leapt, leaving one bronze sandal thrown back out by the fire.

Etna dominates eastern Sicily and has been erupting throughout recorded history. The story that Empedocles jumped into it, either to prove he had become a god or simply to vanish convincingly, is almost certainly a later invention by people who disliked him, and the detail of the sandal thrown back up is the giveaway. Diogenes Laertius reports several rival accounts of his death. The volcano version is the one that stuck, because it suits a man who claimed to walk among mortals as an immortal god.
