Stagira

Chalcidice · Günümüzde Greece

Khalkidiki kıyısında küçük bir kasaba. Aristoteles'in doğduğu yer; babası Makedonya kralının hekimiydi.

Stagira was a small Greek town on the Chalcidice peninsula, where three-fingered headlands reach into the northern Aegean. The sea here is cold in winter and the surrounding hills are forested. Aristotle was born here around 384 BCE, the son of a physician to the Macedonian royal court. He left for Athens at seventeen and did not return. The town was destroyed by Philip of Macedon during his campaigns, then rebuilt — a gesture of goodwill toward Aristotle, who had tutored Philip's son Alexander. The rebuilt Stagira was a mark of royal favor more than a living city. A bronze statue of Aristotle stands there now, in a park built for tourists. The original town produced one man and then faded.
