Thagaste

A small inland town of Roman North Africa, now Souk Ahras, where Augustine was born to a pagan father and a Christian mother who did not let the matter rest.

Thagaste was a modest municipality in the Numidian hills, prosperous enough to educate a clever boy but not to finish the job, which is why Augustine's schooling depended on a wealthy patron. His father Patricius was a pagan town councillor who converted only at the end. His mother Monica prayed, wept and followed him across the Mediterranean. He came back after his conversion and lived here in a small community for three years before Hippo claimed him.
