Frankfurt has always been a commercial city — a city of banks, fairs, and practical people — and this gave it a particular quality as a place of philosophical exile. Schopenhauer arrived in 1831, fleeing the cholera that killed Hegel, and spent the last thirty years of his life here, eating daily at the same hotel table, walking his poodles through the Sachsenhausen lanes, and writing in the privacy of confirmed obscurity. Frankfurt became his city of late vindication: it was here that readers finally came to him, in his sixties, and here that he died, still sharp, still contemptuous, and finally famous.
