About this text

A collection of essays written after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, arguing that nihilism, a genuine collapse of hope and meaning, is as urgent a crisis in Black America as any specific policy failure.

The genuine battle is for the hearts, minds, and souls of a downtrodden people so that a new mode of vision, a new hope, and creative forms of resistance can emerge... Nihilism is not a new phenomenon in Black America. Its natural habitat was first the racist patriarchal plantation.
