The Book of the City of Ladies

Christine de Pizan·1405·French

About this text

An allegorical response to medieval misogynist literature, in which the virtues Reason, Rectitude, and Justice help Christine build a symbolic city from the stories of virtuous and capable women throughout history, arguing that women's apparent inferiority reflects lack of education rather than lack of capacity.

Not all men (and especially the wisest) share the opinion that it is bad for women to be educated. But it is true that many foolish men have claimed this because it displeased them that women knew more than they did.
