Pleasure
Is pleasure the highest good? The Cyrenaics said yes without qualification. Epicurus agreed, then quietly redefined pleasure until it looked more like calm than sensation.
Aristippus of Cyrene argued that pleasure in the present moment is the only thing genuinely good in itself, founding the first systematic hedonism in Western philosophy. Epicurus inherited the claim that pleasure is the highest good but reworked it: real pleasure, he argued, is not intense sensation but the absence of pain and anxiety, achieved through simple living, philosophical clarity, and the quiet company of friends — a redefinition the Cyrenaics considered a retreat from the honesty of their own position. The disagreement between the two schools set the terms for almost every hedonist theory that followed: is pleasure something to be pursued directly and intensely, or something that emerges only once fear and craving are removed?
