Korinthos

Peloponnese · Günümüzde Greece

Yunanistan anakarasını Mora Yarımadası'na bağlayan kıstak üzerinde zengin bir ticaret şehri. Diogenes'in bilinçli bir yoksulluk içinde yaşadığı sokaklar.

Corinth was where the money was. Its twin ports connected the Aegean and Adriatic, and merchants paid handsomely to have goods hauled across the isthmus rather than risk the southern cape. The city was also known for its courtesans, its bronze, and a kind of easy prosperity that made it an unlikely home for Diogenes, who slept in a large ceramic jar near the marketplace and owned nothing else of consequence. He begged, mocked the well-dressed, and once told Alexander the Great to step out of his sunlight. The contrast was the point. In a city built on commerce and pleasure, Diogenes lived as a demonstration that all of it was unnecessary. He died in Corinth, reportedly in old age, and the citizens built him a marble monument.
