Elea
Güney İtalya'da bir Yunan kolonisi. Değişimin bir yanılsama olduğunu ve yalnızca Varlığın gerçek olduğunu savunan Parmenides'in yurdu.
Elea was founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea who fled the Persian advance around 540 BCE and landed on the rough shore of southern Italy. It was never large or prosperous. The harbor was shallow, the hinterland scrubby, and Rome eventually absorbed it as Velia. But the city produced two philosophers who changed how the Western mind thinks about existence. Parmenides wrote a poem arguing that change is impossible — reality is one, whole, and motionless. His student Zeno defended this claim with paradoxes so sharp they still resist easy answers. Elea's isolation may have helped: with no great rivals nearby, its thinkers had room to push ideas as far as they could go.
