A Quran commentary swollen to the size of an encyclopedia, in which every verse becomes an occasion for philosophy: arguments and counter-arguments from theology, cosmology, and Avicennan metaphysics are marshaled, weighed, and often left in deliberate tension. Critics joked it contains everything except commentary; admirers answered that it contains everything.
