Ren (Benevolence)

İnsanlık (Ren). Bir kişiyi kuralları izleyerek değil, başkalarını nefes almak kadar doğal bir şekilde önemseyerek gerçekten iyi yapan nitelik.

Ren is the word Confucius returned to more than any other, yet he rarely defined it directly. It names the quality of genuine humaneness — not politeness performed for social reward, but care for others that has become second nature. Mencius believed humans are born with the seed of ren already inside them, as a field already contains the capacity for grain. When you see a child about to fall into a well, you move without thinking. That reflex is ren showing itself. Confucius taught that ren is cultivated through practice — through ritual, through study, through attending to the people around you day after day. It is not a feeling you either have or lack. It grows or it withers depending on how you live. A ruler without ren governs by fear. A person with ren governs by example.
